April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

There is a lot of attention on cancer – lung, breast, and skin are three that receive a lot of attention in the media. But did you know you can get cancer of the mouth? Oral and oropharyngeal cancer (cancer of the mouth and upper throat) is just as deadly if not detected early. The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 50,000 Americans will get oral and/or oropharynx (throat) head and neck cancers in 2017. At David Crumpton, DDS, we want to make sure your patients are aware of the warning signs and that oral cancer screenings are an important part of keeping you healthy.

Know the symptoms

It’s important to recognize the symptoms of oral cancer and get them checked out right away by your dentist. At David Crumpton, DDS, we offer oral cancer screenings. However, if you notice any of these symptoms in between your regular visits, please call us and schedule an oral cancer screening.

  • a sore, or soreness or irritation that doesn’t go away
  • red or white patches, or pain, tenderness, or numbness in mouth or lips
  • lumps, thickening tissues, rough spots, crusty or eroded areas
  • difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving your jaw or tongue
  • a change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth

Risk Factors

It’s important to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. This helps keeps your entire body healthy, including your mouth and throat. Tobacco use and excessive drinking are two major risk factors for developing oral cancer, especially in men over the age of 50.HPV (human papillomavirus) cases make up approximately 60 percent to 70 percent of all tonsil and tongue-based cancers in the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 9,000 people are diagnosed with throat cancer caused by HPV annually.

The goal is to educate parents about the importance of establishing good oral hygiene habits for their children. Trophy Club family dentist David Crumpton, DDS, is committed to helping our younger patients understand why establishing good dental habits is so important.

When your child comes to visit our Trophy Club dental practice, our friendly and compassionate staff will show your child how to properly brush their teeth, how to floss, and why using mouthwash helps wash away bacteria and germs.

In between visits to our dental practice in Trophy Club, help your child maintain good oral health by:

  • Brush 2 minutes 2 times per day
  • Floss daily
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks

Maximize Your Dental Benefits Before December 31!

Use It or Lose It!

Don’t let your dental insurance benefits go to waste

The end of the year is quickly approaching and that means your to-do list is growing quickly. From running around to various after-school activities, to weekend sporting games, or preparing to host friends and family for Thanksgiving or Christmas, you might feel like squeezing in a dental visit before the end of the year is impossible. But did you know that you have dental insurance benefits that will help you reduce your out-of-pocket expenses? Don’t forget to schedule an appointment with Trophy Club cosmetic dentist David Crumpton, DDS, by December 31 to take full advantage of your dental insurance benefits. We are in-network with Cigna and will help you file any insurance paperwork for any provides we are not in-network.

Twice-Yearly Dental Exam & Cleaning

If you and your family members haven’t gotten your teeth cleaned for a second time this year you are losing out on maximizing your dental benefits. Most dental insurance plans include covering the cost for a dental exam, x-rays, and teeth cleaning. By missing out on the second teeth cleaning, you could be more prone to gum disease or have a cavity that has gone undetected and now requires a root canal. By having regular cleanings at David Crumpton, DDS, in Trophy Club, you can avoid serious conditions from developing that result in costly treatments.

Start a treatment in 2016, complete the treatment in 2017

If you need dental work that isn’t fully covered by your dental insurance, you can help reduce your out-of-pocket expenses by maximizing your benefits in 2016 and completing the treatment in 2017, when your dental benefits reset. This is beneficial if you need extensive restorative services including a dental implant, a dental crown, or dental bridge. These procedures require multiple visits, and by starting treatment in November or December and completed treatment in January or February allows you to maximize your benefits and reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

Schedule An Appointment Today

Don’t delay – call Trophy Club cosmetic dentist David Crumpton, DDS, today and schedule an appointment. We book up quickly in October, November and December and we want to make sure you take full advantage of your dental benefits.
